There are serious short-term and long-term effects of bullying on children’s physical and mental health and Claudio Cerullo believes that the school bullying is a topic of concern for most schools. Many schools institute programs to reduce school bullying.
First of all, school bullying is defined as including several key elements: physical, verbal, or psychological attack or intimidation that is intended to create a sense of fear or actual physical harm to another student or even a teacher. Bullying can be as simple as calling names to spreading rumors and inflicting physical harm. Bullying always involves the improper balance of power. One side is overpowering another and this situation usually repeats over and over again.
Many techniques are used to curb the negative effects of school bullying. Most of the techniques involve the parents as bullying often stems from problems at the home front. Improved playground supervision was another technique that many schools find useful curbing bullying and school violence. Another good way to prevent or deter bullying is to educate children about it. It can also be helpful to encourage more social interaction, as well as empathy. Bullies often are dealing with their own turmoil and simply don’t know how to handle it properly.
Claudio Cerullo advocated the use of police officers and other positive role models to interact with the students on a daily basis. He believes that having fun together is a method of reducing bullying by creating an understanding of the similarities and differences among people. Police officers often accompany the students to a night at a basketball game or to a park.
